Für mein Buch De-Branding suche ich Fotos. Welche und wozu versuche ich im folgenden kurz zu skizzieren. Doch zunächst ein paar Worte zu De-Branding, Branding und dem Buch.

De-Branding
“Images” sind kollektive Vorstellungen zu Produkten, Unternehmen, Ländern, Persönlichkeiten und allem Möglichen. Branding ist der Versuch diese Vorstellungen strategisch zu erzeugen und zu verändern. Allerlei Mittel dienen diesem Zweck – offensichtliche, wie Werbung und Sponsoring, sowie verborgene, wie “Product Placement” und “Advertorials”. Alles wird ‘gebrandet’: die Persönlichkeit, das Produkt, das Unternehmen und die Nation. Strategisches “Image Management” ist ein Paradigma. Omnipräsent und selbstverständlich.
De-Branding möchte dies bewusst machen – in Kritik und kreativer Praxis.

Das Buch
Mit dem Buch versuche ich das Thema De-Branding anschaulich und weitgreifend zu umreissen. Die Rolle von “Branding heute” wird analysiert. Kritische, subversive und kreative Auseinandersetzungen werden dargestellt. Aus Kritik werden Handlungsmöglichkeiten. Möglichkeiten des De-Branding werden anhand unterschiedlichster Arbeiten vorgestellt (von kleinen persönlichen Experimenten bis zu groß angelegten und öffentlichkeitswirksamen Aktionen).
Das Zusammenwirken von Text, Typografie, Diagrammen und Fotografie soll die vielschichtigen Aspekte deutlich machen und Einstiegspunkte in das komplexe Thema bieten.

Fotografische Beobachtungen: Lebenswelten von Marken
Branding durchdringt alle Bereiche des Lebens. Menschen interagieren mit Marken. Menschen kommunizieren Mittels der Verwendung von Marken (bewusst und vor allem unbewusst). Die Phänomenologie dieses Spiels ist vielfältig. Es findet überall statt: im Badezimmer, in den Medien, in sozialen Netzwerken jeder Art, in der Schule, im Nachtleben, in Subkulturen, in öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln, im Sport, in der Kunst und überall, wo moderne Menschen interagieren.
Branding ist derart omnipräsent, daß es als selbstverständlicher Teil der Welt und des Lebens wahrgenommen wird. Es ist normal. Real. Fotografie kann dies bewusst machen. Abgelichtet werden Marken-Phänomene im Alltag. Sie werden neu erkennbar.
Jeder Fotograf sucht sich seinen Blickwinkel und seinen Bereich der Beobachtung. Parameter: wenig Inszenierung, viel Authentizität. Die Wahl des Blickes, der Zeit und des Kontextes sind die Inszenierung. Die Bilder sollen einen klaren lebensweltlichen Bezug haben – Marken im echten Leben. Gerade durch diese Erdung im Alltag werden Zusammenhänge zwischen Identitäten von Marken und Menschen deutlich, werden Übereinstimmungen und Widersprüche sichtbar.

Die fotografischen Beiträge
Eigenständige fotografische Arbeiten sollen ein Gegengewicht zu den teilweise abstrakt wirkenden Diskursen sein. Sie bilden den Rückbezug zur Wirklichkeit, wie wir sie kennen und gleichzeitig bieten sie für die Leser/Betrachter eine Gelegenheit diese zu reflektieren.
Wie viele Bilder jeder Fotograf beiträgt ist nicht definiert. Ein gutes Bild ist ebenso willkommen, wie eine umfangreiche Fotostrecke.

Burtynsky makes large-scale photographs of ‘manufactured landscapes’ – quarries, recycling yards, factories, mines, dams. He photographs civilization’s materials and debris, but in a way people describe as “stunning” or “beautiful,” and so raises all kinds of questions about ethics and aesthetics without trying to easily answer them.
